Evolutionary relationships among orbiviruses

چکیده

The genus Orbivirus consists of 12 defined serological groups of arthropod-borne viruses. The taxonomic group was formed following the demonstration that the genome of bluetongue virus consisted of 10 segments of double-stranded RNA. Viruses with morphology and physico-chemical proper ties similar to those of bluetongue virus were included in the genus. As viruses representative of each serogroup are studied, it is apparent that the orbiviruses are a heterogeneous group and further reclassification of them will be necessary. The structural components and the distinct ecological features of some of the viruses, suggest the basis for taxonomic revision.

Full-Genome Characterisation of Orungo, Lebombo and Changuinola Viruses Provides Evidence for Co-Evolution of Orbiviruses with Their Arthropod Vectors

The complete genomes of Orungo virus (ORUV), Lebombo virus (LEBV) and Changuinola virus (CGLV) were sequenced, confirming that they each encode 11 distinct proteins (VP1-VP7 and NS1-NS4). Phylogenetic analyses of cell-attachment protein 'outer-capsid protein 1' (OC1), show that orbiviruses fall into three large groups, identified as: VP2(OC1), in which OC1 is the 2nd largest protein, including ...

Genetic Characterization of the Tick-Borne Orbiviruses

The International Committee for Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) recognizes four species of tick-borne orbiviruses (TBOs): Chenuda virus, Chobar Gorge virus, Wad Medani virus and Great Island virus (genus Orbivirus, family Reoviridae). Nucleotide (nt) and amino acid (aa) sequence comparisons provide a basis for orbivirus detection and classification, however full genome sequence data were only availa...

Phylogenetic relationships of bluetongue viruses based on gene S7.

Previous phylogenetic analyses based on bluetongue virus (BTV) gene segment L3, which encodes the inner core protein, VP3, indicated a geographical distribution of different genotypes. The inner core protein, VP7, of BTV has been identified as a viral attachment protein for insect cell infection. Because the inner core proteins are involved with infectivity of insect cells, we hypothesized that...

Comparison of the major structural core proteins of tick-borne and Culicoides-borne orbiviruses.

Comparison of sequence data for Broadhaven (BRD) virus, a tick-borne orbivirus, and bluetongue virus (BTV), the type species of the genus, indicated that RNA segments 2 and 7 of BRD virus encode the two structural core proteins, VP2 and VP7, respectively. Segment 2 is 2792 nucleotides in length with a coding capacity for a protein (VP2) of 908 amino acids and a net charge of +8.5 at neutral pH....

Generation of infectious RNA complexes in orbiviruses: RNA-RNA interactions of genomic segments

Viruses with segmented RNA genomes must package the correct number of segments for synthesis of infectious virus particles. Recent studies suggest that the members of the Reoviridae family with segmented double-stranded RNA genomes achieve this challenging task by forming RNA networks of segments prior to their recruitment into the assembling capsid albeit direct evidence is still lacking. Here...
